About ACM-W
ACM-W is ACM’s Women in Computing community. Its mission is to support, celebrate, and advocate for the full engagement of women in all aspects of the computing field.
ACM-W provides programs, activities, and services to members worldwide and works with the broader computing community to advance women’s contributions in computing.
About the ACM-W Communications Committee
The mission of the ACM-W Communications Committee is to amplify and bring attention to the activities, programs, chapters, regions, volunteers, and members of the ACM-W international community.
The committee’s work spans several channels:
- ACM-W website and blog content
- ACM-W newsletter
- social media channels
- storytelling and member spotlights
- podcasts and interviews
- event communications and booths
- marketing materials, graphics, and swag
- email listservs
- regional and chapter communications support
The committee is also responsible for developing, maintaining, and disseminating the ACM-W Communication and Social Media Policy.
Role Descriptions
We are recruiting two volunteers who will lead ACM-W’s global communications as a pair:
- Communications Chair holds overall accountability for ACM-W communications. Sets the strategy, leads and convenes the committee, maintains the relationship with ACM-W leadership, and serves as the final decision-maker and primary point of contact.
- Communications Vice Chair deputises for the Chair, takes direct ownership of defined workstreams (for example, the newsletter, social channels, or website), and acts on the Chair’s behalf when the Chair is unavailable.
You may apply for either role.
Responsibilities shared by both roles:
- developing and delivering ACM-W’s global communications strategy, including new initiatives that help ACM-W reach and engage its global community;
- running ACM-W’s social media, newsletter, and other regular channels;
- surfacing and sharing stories from members, chapters, and regions;
- supporting communications around events, campaigns, awards, and programs;
- collaborating with regional teams to strengthen coordination;
- upholding inclusive, accessible, and ethical communications practice.
Chair (in addition):
- holds final accountability for the committee’s output and strategy;
- chairs meetings, sets the agenda, and represents communications within ACM-W Executive leadership;
- coordinates the committee’s workload and is the main external point of contact;
- maintains the Communications and Social Media Policy.
Vice Chair (in addition):
- leads one or more named workstreams end-to-end;
- steps in for the Chair when required, ensuring continuity;
- supports onboarding and coordination of volunteers within those workstreams.
Time Commitment
These are part-time volunteer assignments. It is expected that the Communications Chair and Vice Chair will each spend approximately 10–15 hours per month on ACM-W communications activities.
The roles also involve attendance at one 2-day face-to-face meeting per year. Travel expenses for these meetings will be reimbursed in line with ACM-W policies.
The assignment is for a two-year term.
ACM-W is a non-profit organisation administered by volunteers. Although these are volunteer positions, they have a direct impact on ACM-W’s global community.
The Communications Chair and Vice Chair will be recognised as members of ACM-W Executive leadership. Their names, photos, and contact information will be included on the ACM-W website, and they will receive a special ACM-W Leadership badge for use in their email signatures and on their social media profiles.
Qualifications
Essential for the Chair:
- demonstrated experience leading or coordinating a team, committee, or volunteer group, ideally distributed or international;
- ability to set and drive a communications strategy rather than only execute one;
- strong written communication and sound editorial judgement;
- confidence representing a function to senior stakeholders.
Essential for the Vice Chair:
- direct technical and content production experience producing communications in at least one channel, e.g., social media, newsletters, blogging, web, storytelling, or podcasts;
- reliability and follow-through in owning defined deliverables;
- willingness to step into the Chair’s duties when needed.
Desirable for either role:
- prior ACM-W, ACM, or comparable volunteer/community experience;
- breadth across several communications channels;
- design, graphics, or multimedia skills;
- familiarity with communications policy, ethics, accessibility, and inclusion.
Required for both: genuine commitment to ACM-W’s mission and the ability to work effectively in a distributed, international team.
