Remembering Vicki Hanson

By Rukiye Altın

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Vicki Hanson, a remarkable leader, scholar, and advocate whose presence and contributions shaped ACM-W and the broader computing community in lasting ways. Vicki Hanson was a pioneering computer scientist, a global leader in computing accessibility, and a tireless advocate for inclusion. She was a role model for women in computing.

Like several members of the ACM-W Global Committee, I first met Vicki when I was a PhD student, attending my first womENcourage conference in Manchester in 2014. Over the years, our paths crossed more frequently through my roles within ACM-W. It was a privilege to work with Vicki across various ACM roles, and I was fortunate to collaborate with her again just a few months ago — making this loss especially difficult to comprehend.

Vicki with ACM-W Volunteers

From more than 25 years of volunteer service to her leadership as CEO, Vicki led with humility, listened with care, and remained unwavering in her dedication to inclusion, accessibility, and equity. She was deeply thoughtful and attentive to people, and she leaves behind a remarkable and lasting impact through her contributions, her mentorship, and the countless lives she touched with generosity and care.

Our thoughts are with her family, friends, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. The ACM-W community mourns her loss and honours her enduring legacy.
