Part-time Volunteer Assignment

Job Description

The ACM-W Executive Committee is recruiting for a volunteer to lead the ACM Scholarship for Attendance of Research Conferences Program.  This project is well-established and has been offering women students in Computer Science support to attend research conferences since 2013.

Attending conferences in person allows young and upcoming researchers to make meaningful human connections leading to strong collaborations, sometimes life-long ones, and to aspire to be more than they might otherwise do.

Applications are evaluated on 6 occasions each year, to distribute awards across a range of conferences, with usually 3-6 awards given for each group of applications. ACM-W has helped students attend a wide range of meetings including SIGGRAPH, SIGCHI, Women in Cyber Security, ACM EC, SIGCSE, IEEE Conferences, DIS, IPDPS, ICCC, ACM CHI, AAMAS, FLAIRS, WIMS, CSCW, GECCO, ICAPS, and ICSE, amongst others.

The ACM-W Scholarships Chair is responsible for soliciting applications, recruiting reviewers for the Scholarship Selection Committee, and coordinating awards for the selected students. The position is also responsible for collecting, editing, and publishing post-event reports from scholarship winners.

This position is also responsible for administering the project’s budget, creating annual reports, collecting and maintaining an archive of activities, webpages and announcements. The Scholarship chair is responsible for ensuring transparency, regional diversity and consistency across all scholarships. They will communicate regularly with the Standing Committees Chairs, and other relevant leaders to monitor and promote scholarships in all regions.

Compensation, Hours, and Benefits

It is expected that the Scholarships Chair will spend 10-30 hours a month. The assignment is for a two year term, with an option for one two-year extension.

ACM-W is a non-profit organization, administered entirely by volunteers. This is a volunteer position, but it directly impacts the ACM-W global community of 70,000+ members. The Scholarship Chair’s name and contact info are included on the website. They will also receive a special ACM-W Leadership badge for their email signature card, and social media accounts.

Qualifications

The successful applicant will have experience with leading large program development projects, managing volunteers, and creating platforms to facilitate collaboration between diverse groups. Being an ACM Member, experience of working with different geographical groups and being involved with related volunteer organizations will be additional plus points.
