Ellen L. Walker received a Sc.B. degree from Brown University in 1981, an M.S. degree from Carnegie Mellon University in 1983, and a Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University in 1989. She is currently Professor of Computer Science at Hiram College, a small liberal arts college in Northeastern Ohio. Her research interests include computer vision, fuzzy logic, artificial intelligence and computer science education.

She is deeply interested in undergraduate teaching and mentoring as well as issues affecting women in computer science. She has received funding from the National Science Foundation for both research and curriculum development. In addition to teaching over 20 different undergraduate courses, she has advised over 50 undergraduate research projects.

Prior to joining Hiram College, she was an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where she advised three Ph.D. students and several masters students to completion. At Rensselaer, she co-directed the NSF-funded PipeLINK program in 1995, which connected high school, undergraduate, graduate and faculty women to help increase attraction and retention of women in computer science.

She served on the board of the North American Fuzzy Information Processing Society from 1999-2005, and served as the Program Chair for the 2003 North American Fuzzy Information Processing Society Conference. She will be General Chair for the 2009 Ohio Celebration of Women in Computing, having served as Program Chair in 2005 and Registration Chair in 2007. She is currently the Webmistress for the ACM Committee on Women.

Dr. Walker was chosen in 2006 as a Distinguished Professor for the CRA-W Cohort of Associate Professors Program (Education Track). She is a member of AAAI and CCSC, and a Senior Member of ACM and IEEE. Her awards include a 1999 Paul E. Martin Award from Hiram College and a 2005 Mentor Recognition Award from the University of California San Diego.
