Dr Vashti Galpin was until recently a part-time lecturer in Computer Science at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), Johannesburg, South Africa. She completed
her Honours and Masters degrees at the University of the Witwatersrand, and her doctorate at the University of Edinburgh. Dr Galpin has taught Introduction
to Research Methods, and Databases. Her research interests are in the areas of process algebras and computer science education.
Dr Galpin's interest in women in computing first started during her Master's when she wrote a paper on gender and computer science education. Since
then she and a colleague, Professor Ian Sanders, have investigated attitudes towards computer science among students entering the Faculty of Science
at Wits, as well as supervising research into role models and self-efficacy.
In 2002, Dr Galpin published a paper that presents statistics on women in computing from more than 30 countries worldwide.
