Propagating K-12 Outreach Programs (Outreach KIT)

Starting Date: April 2006
Status: ongoing

The goal of this project is to help schools across the country start K-12 outreach programs using Indiana University's successful programs, such as Just Be, as models. Just Be was launched in 2004 by the Women in Computing group at IU to encourage young people to consider IT careers. Just Be visits about a dozen middle and high schools in southern Indiana annually. While one program administered by one school can impact a limited geographical area, to achieve a sustained change in attitudes on a national level requires the simultaneous efforts of many schools in many areas.

To reach underrepresented groups, we particularly encourage students in Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) to initiate outreach programs for their schools in their communities. Bring IT On! is a workshop for students from Historically Black Colleges and Universitites (HBCUs) to learn about outreach and graduate school. In 2006, ten HBCUs participated in the program.
