About ACM-W

Our Purpose

The mission of ACM-W is to engage in activities and projects that aim to improve the working and learning environments for women in computing.
This includes promoting activities that result in more equal representation of women in CS such as mentoring or role modelling, monitoring the status of women in industrial and academic computing through the gathering of statistics, providing historical information about women's accomplishments and roles in CS, and serving as a repository of information about programs, documents and policies of concern to women in CS.

Organisation
ACM-W is composed of two co-chairs, a working committee, and an advisory committee. The working committee consists of ACM-W project leaders and the advisory committee serves the role of providing advice and suggestions to the co-chairs and the committee as a whole. Currently ACM-W's internal organizational goal is to remain efficient and effective. This is why the advisory committee is small and a requirement for membership on the working committee is to be a leader of an ACM-W sponsored project. Thus, all members are productive and are actively contributing to the mission and goals of ACM-W.

Internships
ACM-W is launching an internship program to assist ACM-W in specific areas. Undergraduate students will be sought out that ACM-W can hire part time for a semester. Students will apply to ACM-W for the internship and the successful candidates will become interns. ACM-W members will monitor the interns and the Internship Program. The interns will provide a valuable service to ACM-W and ACM, while at the same time be provided with valuable professional experience, a working knowledge of ACM, and a great addition to their resume.

For example, one key area ACM-W will focus on is the gathering of statistics of women in computing in universities and industry. This information is crucial in determining where issues lie, determining whether some initiatives are working, and providing the understanding ACM-W needs to move forward in a directed constructive manner. Some data is available from sources such as the Department of Education and Taulbee Surveys, and ACM-W has leveraged much of this. However, other sources need to be explored such as the Department of Labor, Human Resources Departments in large technical companies, and so forth. ACM-W members are doing some of this work, however, there is a need for help which can be supplied by student interns.
