Gloria Childress Townsend, Professor of Computer Science, has taught at DePauw University for thirty-four years and chaired her department for six years. Her research interests lie in evolutionary computation, robotics, computing ethics and gender issues of computing. She holds three degrees in mathematics or mathematics-related fields and one degree in computer science. Dr. Townsend enjoys teaching introductory computing courses, because she loves to see students, who have never before studied computer science, learn about and catch her enthusiasm for computer science – to the extent that they become majors. Her upper-level teaching concentrates on Autonomous Robotics, where she has begun a research project involving robots and the elderly. As a member of ACM-W’s Women’s Council, Gloria directs the ACM-W Chapters project.
